What to do
in Campeche.

Every list of things to do in Campeche starts with the walls. Which is right — but the walls are a beginning, not a checklist. Here's how to actually use them, and what comes after.

The walls & the baluartes.

Baluarte de la Soledad, Campeche city walls Baluarte de la Soledad — the best sea views in the city.

The circuit of defensive walls enclosing Campeche's historic centre is one of only two complete fortified perimeters surviving in the Americas. Built between 1686 and 1704 after generations of pirate raids, the walls connect eight baluartes — fortified bastions that once housed artillery and garrison troops. Most are now museums or cultural spaces, and none charge much to enter.

Walk the full circuit in the morning before the heat settles — it takes about forty minutes at a stroll, longer if you stop at each baluarte. The views toward the Gulf are best in the hour before the sun climbs. In the evening, from around five o'clock, the walls are lit from below and the temperature drops. Both versions are worth experiencing.

The Baluarte de San Carlos houses the city museum — small, well-curated, and almost always empty. The Baluarte de la Soledad overlooks the sea and holds the best collection of pre-Hispanic stelae in the city. The Puerta del Mar (Sea Gate) and the Puerta de Tierra (Land Gate) are the two surviving gateways into the walled centre.

Walk the walls with context. Our evening experience begins at Puerta del Mar and traces the walls through Calle 59 to the mercado — stories included, dinner at the end. The Gates & The Night →

The historic centre.

Cathedral of Campeche, Plaza de Independencia
Municipal Library balcony view, Campeche

Inside the walls, the historic centre takes about twenty minutes to cross on foot — which means most visitors underestimate it. The Plaza de la Independencia is the centre of the centre: the Cathedral, the Municipal Library with its balcony (most visitors never find it — go up), the old government buildings. Morning or evening are best. Midday in summer is for shade.

Calle 59 runs from the Puerta del Mar straight through to the Puerta de Tierra — the full length of the old city in one line. It's the best street in Campeche for walking slowly.

San Franscisquito, a few blocks from the plaza, is the oldest church in the city — founded in 1546, predating the walls themselves. Almost no tourists visit. That's reason enough to go.

Curated experiences.

We design and run small-group experiences for travellers who want the city understood rather than just seen. Every stop curated, every business verified, everything included in the price.
